A Brief History Of VEPVPA
The first Vancouver Principals' Association was formed in 1929 following the amalgamation of the municipalities of South Vancouver and Point Grey with Vancouver city.
By 1935 the Vancouver Schools Administrators Association had formed into Elementary and Secondary sections. During this time, principals maintained their membership in the local teachers' associations and the BCTF and the association evolved as a Provincial Specialist Association. In 1967 elementary principals and vice principals began meeting in groups representing different 'zones' of the city. These zones set a pattern that led to the present VSB ‘area’ organization. Provincial legislation in 1987 defined and mandated the role of Administrative Officer. VSAA(E) was dissolved to become the Vancouver Elementary School Administrators' Association. The BC Principals' and Vice Principals' Association was also formed at this time in response to the legislative and BCTF changes and Vancouver elementary became a ‘chapter’ of the BCPVPA.
Members restructured the association in 1992 to mandate BCPVPA membership and to clarify the Association’s role as a registered, non-profit society. The restructuring identified four main goals of the association:
1) promotion of professional development;
2) promotion and protection of member welfare;
3) advocacy for members and for children;
4) promotion of social contact and activities among members
In 2001, the association and individual members resigned from the BCPVPA and VEPVPA embarked on a more independent course to fulfilling our goals. The 2001 review re-affirmed our four goals and set new directions for future development in the areas of:
1) professional development;
2) legal and economic support;
3) professional voice;
4) professional affiliation.
